adds legitimacy to using digital signatures on InfoPath forms As such, all of the details in the Additional Information dialog are included as part of the signed data Without going into all of the properties that are captured, we ll say that the more important ones to us are the Current view information and a captured screenshot of that view Unlike signing an e-mail message or a Word document, signing an InfoPath form poses a unique problem when using digital signatures Recall that when lling out a form, the user is actually editing an XML document in the background But the user cannot directly see that XML document As you know by now, the form designer completely determines what the user sees (controls bound to groups and elds) and how he or she sees it (data formatting, data validation, conditional formatting, rules, and so on) So, using digital signatures to blindly sign the form data doesn t really make sense That s why it s important to include the visual component of the form data in the digital signature (as shown in the Additional Information dialog) Signing XML data is one thing, but keeping a record of what you were looking at when you signed the form is arguably more relevant At least it would be one of the primary pieces of evidence if someone challenged what you had lled out Remember that a picture is worth a thousand words! After you click the Sign button, the Digital Signatures dialog appears with a signature, as we saw in Figure 1136 When this dialog is closed, we ll be back to editing the form as we originally started However, you might notice a few peculiarities because we re now looking at a signed form Let s start at the top of the window shown in Figure 1140 and work our way down First is the title of the InfoPath window; we now see [Signed] appended to our form s name This is the most dependable noti cation to the user that the form is signed Next is the edit-time visual of a certi cate icon that appears when we hover over or click on any text-based controls (You see two Text Box controls with visuals in Figure 1140 because the rst one was clicked on while the second has the mouse hovered over) It is not obvious from the gure, but all the Text Box controls are read-only because they are included in the signed data Clicking on a Text Box does not let the cursor inside, and the data cannot be changed What may be clearer from the same gure are the shaded Option Button and Check Box controls Similar to the Text Box controls, hovering over these controls will also show an edit-time certi cate to reiterate that this data is signed and cannot be modi ed.

Finally, toward the bottom of the view, we have links to insert Optional Section controls Certi cate visuals are not shown when hovering over these links, and it s possible to click on one to try to insert the Section When you click to insert, InfoPath will not allow the insertion and will show an error message: InfoPath cannot update the data, because the form is currently read-only (Figure 1141)

If others open your digitally signed form, they will immediately see a noti cation, shown in Figure 1142, that the form is indeed signed There are other ways, as we discussed earlier, to determine whether a form is digitally signed But this dialog is obviously more explicit, which can be a helpful reminder to people who don t usually work with digitally signed forms on a regular basis

Here s something unique and uniquely useful: Lycos enables you to keep your search results handy while you check out individual links. When you click the Sidesearch link next to any listing on the search results page, two things hap pen. First, Lycos goes directly to the desired Web page. Second, it opens a new pane on the left side of your browser window, as shown in Figure 5-3, and transfers the search results page to this pane. With this Sidesearch pane open, it s easy to click directly to other listed pages without having to jump back and forth to the normal search results page.
